This week, Deborah Small tells the story of Juneteenth in light of the Exodus, pointing to what the restoration of lost labor, wealth, and self-possession to black Americans truly involves:
It still amazes me every time I hear that the majority of African Americans couldn't even deal with a $1000 emergency. And the access to home ownership? The government has estimated that at the current rate of advance, it would take black people 5,400 years to close the gap in homeownership between black and white Americans... that's over ten times longer than the country has been in existence, it's crazy.
